This evening, I returned to a beautiful garden; so many tunes familiar to me in my youth – too many to give you more than an overview.

I am old enough to remember the Light programme and the Home Service. Some of the pieces were theme tunes for popular programmes and others were included in the Beeb’s musical repertoire.

But this was more than just the radio; later the telly made an impact on popular culture. Theme tunes from admired shows, and some from film-land were also included in the programme.

A delightful intro, I Saw Three Ships was appropriate since it is a new arrangement by the much-admired John Rutter, President of Trianon.

Barwick Green by Arthur Wood, a theme tune introduced in the 1950s is still with us today – The Archers tune of course. Who remembers Holiday for Strings by David Rose? It reminded me of the interval at the pictures. And Oh, A Song in my Heart – Rodgers and Hart – unashamedly romantic.

A medley of tunes from James Bond arranged by the local and highly talented Andrew Burke was stimulating.

As Time Goes By from Casablanca gave soloists Michaela Bienikova and Max Wilson, members of the choir, a chance to shine and this, they most certainly did.

Steve Browne, leader of the orchestra, played solo violin in the vibrant and exciting Czardas Hungarian Dance by Vittorio Monti. His performance was an impressive piece of master musicality; he was utterly superb!

The finale looked forward to the celebrations in 2012 and as compère Janet Dann said: we can watch them all from the sofa.

Choir and orchestra, conducted by Chris Green, were excellent and enjoyed by an enthusiastic audience. A multiple hit programme by the ever-popular Trianon.
