More than 60 firefighters were called to the blaze at a two-storey building at The Street, in Rushmere St Andrew, just before 7pm and eight fire engines and three specialist vehicles attended the incident.

Firefighters worked for two hours to bring the blaze under control but no-one was hurt in the incident.

Some crews remained on the scene all night damping down and ensuring nothing flared up again – at breakfast time on Wednesday one appliance was still at the site.

Dave Collins, Suffolk Fire and Rescue area commander, said an investigation into the blaze is underway but fireworks are not being ruled out as a possible cause.

He said: “The fire was at a derelict building, there were two derelict buildings side by side. One has a thatched roof and one has a tiled roof and obviously the thatched building caught fire. We were satisfied that the other building was not damaged.

“We have not been able to establish the cause but we are not ruling out the possibility of fireworks as they were seen by witnesses on both sides of the building.

“An investigation is underway and will continue tomorrow. There will be a presence at the scene overnight.

“I’d like to thank all our blue light colleagues for their help this evening as well as UK Power Networks and local residents.

“I’d also like to thank both the rugby club and the hockey club who found alternative exits so that they did not have to come through the incident, which is greatly appreciated.

Crews from Woodbridge (two), Holbrook, Felixstowe, Leiston, Needham Market, Hadleigh, Ipswich East and Princes Street attended.

A spokesman for Suffolk police said the force assisted the fire service with road closures along Humber Doucy Lane and The Street, and diversions are in place.

A fire sparked in a shed behind the buildings earlier this year, which firefighters were able to deal with quickly.
