Engineering students from One sixth form in Ipswich are attempting to build a world record setting vehicle.

The project tasks teams with building a full-sized friction motor vehicle – a dragster – to try and beat a world record or set a benchmark time.

First the students will build a scale version, around 25 times smaller, which will be used in a competition at the sixth form next year, before embarking on their full-size build.

Engineering technician Andy Taylor said: “Students will consider what materials they use and think about costs and the practicalities associated with the challenge.

“Hopefully the project will stimulate an interest in the processes involved in developing something from a germ of an idea to creating a working end product.

“It would be quite something to get a well-known figure to drive the dragster in the future.

“Personally, someone like Guy Martin would be the ideal person in my opinion.”
