Football fans from Suffolk and beyond have shared their memories and stories about Kevin Beattie.
Many fans took to social media to talk about their experiences of meeting Beattie or seeing him play in person.
Stephen Skeet recalled playing against Beattie long after he had left Ipswich Town.
“I played with Kevin Beattie a number of times when he was my current age 40,” he said.
“Despite having health barriers he was so excited to play and made everyone feel amazing.
“He gave me loads of time imparting views and advice. A very genuine guy, an amazing talent and an ITFC legend.”
Jonathan Winearls remembered his own encounter with Beattie at Portman Road.
“I turned up at reception at Portman Road for one of my trials obviously looking nervous when Kevin walked in, took one look and said ‘bloody hell they make them big in your parts’ and took me for a tour around the players area which was just off reception,” he said.
“That calmed my nerves and every time we bumped into each other after that he always asked how things were going and just had time for all of the youngsters.
“Always generous with his time and knowledge of the game.”
Jess Spivey added: “Sad news for Town fans. I used to go to watch as a young child – despite being a Man Utd fan.
“He was a terrifying opponent and always seemed totally composed under pressure.”
Tony Stone described him as simply “the best ever to pull on the shirt”.
“God only knows what his value would have been had he played today,” he said.
Ivor Moon recalled Beattie’s grace in defeat after his team won a Sunday league game against his side.
“Once the trophies etc were presented he came into our dressing room and congratulated us on our win, saying we were the better team on the day,” he added.
Beattie’s granddaughter Grace Liffen thanked his fans on Twitter for their messages and memories: “R.I.P grandad, you was [sic] my most favourite person ever, you inspired me so much and now you’re gone I’m going to be lost without you, fly high my beautiful angel rest in peace, I love you.
“Thank you for all of the support my grandad’s fans are giving me and my family means a lot, keep showing love.”
