Drivers in Suffolk and Essex are being warned of the latest major roadworks taking place this weekend and over the next week.

• A12 junctions 24 Kelvedon north to 23 Kelvedon south, Essex: bridge repair

Highways England announced earlier this week that work to re-install the Ewell Bridge across the A12 at Kelvedon will take place this weekend.

The work has been criticised for taking place at the same time as railway work.

To allow the bridge to be swung back into place, the A12 will be closed in both directions, between junctions 23-24 northbound and 25-24 southbound, from 10pm on Saturday May 20 (last night) until 4am on Monday May 22 (tomorrow morning).

Highways England said: “The A12 will be closed northbound between junctions 23 (Kelvedon South) and 24 (Kelvedon North) and southbound between junctions 25 (Marks Tey) and 24, from Saturday May 20, 10pm, until Monday May 22, 4am.

“The A12 closure will be in place throughout the weekend continuously from 10pm on Saturday until 4am on Monday. Drivers should plan ahead and consider whether their journeys will be affected during that time before setting out.

“There will be a clearly signed diversion route in place where drivers travelling northbound will exit the A12 at junction 19 (Chelmsford north – A130), then take the A131, A130 and A120 to re-join the A12 at junction 25. Drivers travelling southbound will follow this route in reverse.”

• A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire: major improvements

Highways England said: “Early preparatory construction work on the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon scheme has been underway for a number of months, and construction of the new road has now started.

“We are currently carrying out a variety of tasks for which we need to close lanes or carriageway on the A1, A14 and some local roads, usually overnight between 8pm and 6am, unless otherwise stated. A clearly signed diversion route will always be in place for closures.”

The work includes:

- Creating safe crossing points for plant on a number of local roads;

- Installing access points to our construction compounds;

- Taking core samples of the existing A1 and A14 carriageways to help us plan construction;

- Clearing sites next to the live carriageway of vegetation;

- Installing CCTV and average speed cameras;

- Installing information boards.

For this week, the planned closures are:

- Full closures Monday, May 22 to Thursday, May 25: A1 northbound between Brampton Hut and Alconbury.

- Lane closures Monday, May 22 to Friday, May 26: A1 northbound Brampton to Brampton Hut, lane two closed.

The scheme is due to be completed in March 2021.
