With most of the roads in Ipswich closed as the town is being dug-up and rejigged to make sure that the budget for disrupting traffic flow is spent, and the regular accidents and road works on the A12, the chaos on the A14 fits right in. Perhaps it's time for SCC to invest in a six figure annual salary to appoint a Road Tsar to oversee the whole sorry mess.

Gantry signs were saying "Expect delays" or "long delays", not "road closed" for the onion incident. I left from near Southwold at 11am heading to Hertfordshire, a journey of around 100 miles, and didn't get there till after 4pm. Taken off the A14, drivers were left directionless at the first roundabout; a confused lorry driver probably saved me some time by failing to give way to me on the roundabout and forcing me back onto the eastbound carriageway of the A14. I then headed back up the A12 and turned across country via Framlingham and Stowmarket, coming back down the A14 the other side, when I finally saw gantry signs saying that the road was closed though it was being announced as closed on the radio. I hadn't turned on the radio until after I was at a standstill waiting to be sent off the A14. So incorrect signage, lack of information, lack of traffic control or proper diversions and on the whole a total shambles.
