A drink driver has been jailed after being caught almost four times over the legal limit - twice since the start of June.

Lynne Rumsey, 45, of Lion Green in Barrow, was first arrested at around 4.30pm on Monday, June 2, after police received reports of a woman who looked drunk driving a red Rover Metro.

Police discovered Rumsey in the Hospital Road area of Bury St Edmunds, struggling to manoeuvre the car. When officers stopped the car, Rumsey refused to get out and was said to have become hostile.

She was arrested, taken into custody and charged with driving with 130 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Rumsey was bailed to appear before magistrates on Tuesday, June 17, however she was arrested again after crashing into an unattended parked car on the A1304 Bury Road in Newmarket at around 5.10pm on Wednesday.

She was found uninjured in the car and arrested after refusing to provide a roadside breath test.

In custody she provided tests – and was charged with having with 136 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

She was detained for court and appeared before magistrates in Bury St Edmunds yesterday, to face both charges. Magistrates jailed Rumsey for 16 weeks and disqualified her from driving for four years.

The arrests came during Suffolk Constabulary’s month-long summer drink drive campaign, which is part of a Europe-wide initiative. During last year’s joint Norfolk-Suffolk campaign 4,648 people were stopped and breathalysed with 174 drivers risking their lives and the lives of others by drinking and driving.
