FOOTBALL wasn't enough to keep more than 500 die-hard bikers away from their annual charity ride through Suffolk.

Chairman of the Copdock Motorcycle Club, Roger Taylor, said: "For motorbike fans, their bikes take priority over the World Cup. Motorcycling is a grown up sport, not like football."

Riders from as far afield as north London and Buckinghamshire made up the impressive convoy from the Washbrook Services to Benhall, all under a police escort.

Inspector Mike Hinshelwood, who reported no trouble said, said: "In previous years we have had calls from members of the public fearing they were being taken over by Hells Angels. But it's a peaceful and well-organised event."

And a money-spinner for local charities including the East Anglian Children's Hospice. The club has raised more than £100,000 in the last ten years.

First timer Guy Coulson from Leiston who rides a Suzuki 650, said: "It's a great day for it. It's nice to get away from the football."
