AVID book worms have today laid eyes on their new look library for the first time following a multi-million pound refurbishment scheme.
For months users of Bury St Edmunds Central Library have either had to travel down to the temporary facility in Shire Hall or the meeting house in St John’s Street to take out books.
But this morning the town’s main library, in Sargents Walk, Bury, reopened its doors to the public following the £2million improvement works.
Whereas the old building simply housed the library and a coffee shop, the new-look design also hosts a new children’s centre and a Learning and Enterprise Access Point (LEAP), meeting facilities and a social enterprise cafe called Café Libra.
Rosemary Clarke, the county council’s portfolio holder for sport, culture, diversity, health and wellbeing, said: “I am a huge fan of bringing libraries into the modern age so we can cater for the needs of everybody, from those who wish to read online to those with more traditional tastes. “Libraries are no longer just about books, they are a valuable community resource, with a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.
“With everything that is now on offer in Bury library, it should be a wonderful addition to the area and a hub for local life.”
Graham Newman, children and young people portfolio holder, said: “Children’s literacy skills start long before they begin school.
“We have found in other parts of the county that co-locating children’s centres with libraries offers even greater access to learning opportunities for young people aged 0-5.
“Being one of the largest in the county, Bury Library will take these opportunities to an even higher level.
“A wide range of other activities and services are also available through children centres for families to enjoy in a safe and comfortable environment.”
A programme of events will be held this week to mark the re-opening including a holiday-themed story time in the children’s library area, taster sessions in the LEAP and children’s centres, tours of the building, Bookstart sessions and an art exhibition displaying work from members of the library’s “Toptime Art Group”.
An official opening ceremony will be held on September 15 from 6 pm, when Mr Newman and Mrs Clarke will make speeches.
