Suffolk County Councillor Mark Ereira is working to get barriers under the bridge on Fornham Road in Bury St Edmunds where cars park on the pavement.

Bollards are due to be installed underneath a bridge in Bury St Edmunds to stop vehicles parking across the pavement.

Suffolk police have said they are aware of the problem underneath the A14 bridge at Fornham Road in Bury St Edmunds and have been working with Suffolk County Council to find a solution.

Suffolk county councillor Mark Ereira said he was “pleased” that bollards are going to be installed on both sides of the road. “You cannot be parking on the pavements where people need to walk; people with guide dogs, pushchairs and young children. It’s just not something that can be permitted,” he said.

Mr Ereira, who represents the Tower division, said it was a recent problem and believed those choosing to park there may be workers who have been displaced from a nearby lane. He did not believe people using the nearby train station were responsible.

He understood the bollards would be in place in the next four to six weeks.

Sergeant Alistair Torkington from Bury Central Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “We are aware of parking problems in Fornham Road near to and underneath the bridge. We are working with Suffolk County Council to find a long-term sustainable solution to the issue.

“We have issued tickets to those parking irresponsibly and will continue to provide enforcement in the area.”
