Barclays bank in Bury St Edmunds town centre has been forced to close after a car crashed into the front of it.

The car, driven by an “elderly lady” according to bystanders, careered up the path in the Buttermarket and into the building’s glass front at around 10.30am today.

Store manager Jane Goodship said the branch had to close until the building had been checked for structural damage.

She added: “Hopefully it won’t be too long. It’s just a precaution because I don’t want to put any customers in any danger whatsoever.

“It’s come right through the other side, so we’re just waiting for a premises team to come and check it out. The most important thing is the lady’s okay.”

The bank’s branch in Tollgate Lane is open for any customers.
