The start of the World Cup was an unforgettable day for students at a Bury St Edmunds school.

At Hardwick Primary about 90 pupils were involved in their own World Cup opening ceremony yesterday, dressed in the colours or costume of the country they were representing.

Football-crazy teacher Nick Wells said the children had been looking forward to the event for weeks.

He said they had been learning about Brazil and the World Cup this term for a school project, adding their own opening ceremony was the “stand-out moment”.

“It brings it to life for them,” Mr Wells said. “And even if football isn’t their favourite thing they have learned something about their adopted nation. I think every child has had a wonderful time and it will be something that lives long in their memory.”

The children, in their costumes, paraded around the school field and shared one of the facts they had learned about their adopted nation.

They also formed a “living map,” placing themselves on the location of their countries.

Other activities included baking a cake and decorating it with the Brazilian flag, football skills and a flag-decorating workshop.

Mr Wells said one of the students had even contacted BBC Radio 2 about the event and spoke to presenter Chris Evans on air.
