A MAN has been jailed for two years after admitting a string of burglaries at houses in the Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury areas.
Residents of two of the houses – in Chedburgh and Lawshall – were in bed when 21-year-old Jacob Norman broke into their homes, Ipswich Crown Court heard.
Norman, of Tayfen Road, Bury St Edmunds, admitted two offences of burglary, one count of possessing cannabis and asked for 18 other offences to be considered.
Richard Kelly, prosecuting, told the court that on October 1 a man was in bed at his semi-detached bungalow in Bury Road, Chedburgh, when he heard the sound of footsteps but thought it was animal.
He discovered the burglary the next morning and found that £1,700 and a wallet had been stolen.
On October 13, Norman targeted a large isolated house in Lawshall while the owners were asleep.
The property and cars had been left insecure and Norman had stolen cash from an office.
The owners of the house discovered the burglary when they went downstairs in the morning and found drawers had been searched and left open.
When Norman was arrested he said he had needed money to buy drugs. Police found a laptop computer at his flat that he had bought with money he had stolen.
The offences taken into consideration included burglary and theft from cars and were committed between August 2010 and October this year.
In the majority of cases he stole quantities of cash, in some cases totalling four-figure sums, and jewellery.
After the sentencing hearing Detective Inspector David Giles, of Bury St Edmunds CID, said: “Norman was a prolific burglar and caused much distress and inconvenience to the people he targeted. This outcome proves that we are determined to target persistent criminals and I hope this will act as a deterrent to others.”
