‘Crash and bang’ as car collides with Georgian Coffee House in Woodbridge Thoroughfare

Shopkeepers have reported hearing a “crash and a bang” as a car drove into a Suffolk town centre tea room.

Suffolk police received reports of an accident in Thoroughfare, Woodbridge, at around 1.40pm.

Bob Ashley, who volunteers at the Oxfam shop in Thoroughfare, said an older driver in a blue Volkswagen Golf had crashed into the Georgian Coffee House opposite.

“We were just inside the chop and heard a crash and a bang and then the whirring of the engine,” he added.

“The guy seems OK, he’s just sitting in a chair.”

A spokesman for Suffolk Constabulary said the ambulance service had been called - but was stood down after it emerged the driver was not seriously injured.

No one in the cafe is reported to have been hurt.

A member of staff at the coffee house said the business remained open.

“The guy is fine and everything’s back to normal,” she added.

Mr Ashley said it was the second time in recent months a car had collided with a shop in Thoroughfare.

He said the last accident happened near to the Job Centre.

“Someone came off the pavement and went straight into the shop,” he added.

“It was lucky no one was walking there.”
