IPSWICH: A Radio One DJ and chart topping star have today leant their support to one Ipswich charity after a hugely successful fundraising ball.

Ipswich Mencap held their Cabaret night on Friday raising more than £3,000 to help improve respite care services for children with learning difficulties.

Guests were delighted by local bands 'The Inflatables' former X-factor contestant Dean Vinyard, Patchymatt Disco and the stars of the night 'Committed to the Blues Brothers'.

Ipswich Mencap chairperson Barbara Thorn said she had been overwhelmed with the support from everyone including Radio One DJ Jo Whiley and pop sensation Will Young.

She said: “It was just fantastic. Everyone was thrilled with the evening and enjoyed themselves.

“Many local companies had sponsored the event and my thanks go to each and everyone of them for their support and of course Steve, Matt and Dorinda Suttle, The Patchymatt Team.

“I was absolutely bowled over when I received the letters from Jo Whiley and Will Young.”

In her letter Jo Whiley said: “I have been hearing such fantastic things about Ipswich Mencap's Barbara Thorn and her team.

“I am amazed the job she does as chairperson as well as mum to her three kids. I hope you all have a great night, raise lots of money for Ipswich Mencap and have loads of fun doing so.”

And Will Young added: “Please pass on my sincere thanks to all the artists who are performing and to the sponsors who have taken the time and effort to make a difference and support Ipswich Mencap.

“Congratulations to Barbara and all of the team for the brilliant work you do.”

The money raised will go towards revamping the summer house at Burgess House, the respite care home in Felixstowe Road, into a sensory room as well as adding a sensory garden at the home.
