Archant

Detectives investigating the James Attfield murder have eliminated another man from their enquiry.

A man shown in one of three e-fit images (e-fit number two – bald man) released by Essex Police in the aftermath of the crime has been identified and eliminated from the investigation, a force spokesman said.

Witnesses spoke to detectives and provided details and descriptions of the movements and facial composition of three men who were seen in the vicinity of Mr Attifeld on the evening of March 28.

The latest development means detectives are still working to identify two other people shown in the e-fit images.

Mr Attfield, 33, was found seriously injured with 102 stab wounds in Castle Park off Guildford Road in Colchester shortly before 6am on March 29. He died a short time later at the scene.

The vulnerable father-of-five from East Bay in the town was last seen in the River Lodge Public House on Middleborough on March 28.

He left there shortly after 10pm before his body was found by a passer-by the following morning.

Earlier today police said they have now identified another three people recorded on CCTV, leaving only eight people that need to be identified from CCTV images.

A man and a woman identified in CCTV images have come forward, with detectives set to speak to them to find out if they are also the couple seen on a bench in the park at 11.30pm on March 28.

Another man also identified in CCTV images has also contacted police and could be eliminated from the investigation after speaking to officers.

Meanwhile, a man and a woman, both aged 27 and from Colchester, are on police bail until May 21 after being arrested in connection with the murder.

A Crimestoppers reward of up to £5,000 still remains on offer for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the murder.

Anyone with information is asked to call Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
