A man shown in one of three e-fit images (e-fit number two bald man) released by Essex Police in the aftermath of the crime has been identified and eliminated from the investigation, a force spokesman said.

An appeal for information relating to the murder of James Attfield, who was discovered with 102 stab wounds, in Colchester will be featured on the BBC Crimewatch programme tonight.

Police investigating the incident are still trying to establish the 33-year-old’s movements between leaving the River Lodge pub just after 10pm on March 28 and when he was found in Lower Castle Park just before 6am the next day.

Detectives are keen to trace a woman seen on CCTV walking through the park at 12.36am on the Saturday and then again with a man at 2.19am.

Officers are also still trying to trace a couple seen sitting on a bench in Lower Castle Park, close to the lake, at 11.30pm on March 28.

The man is described as white, of stocky build and appears tall with long legs. The only description of the woman is that she is white.

They were sitting at opposite ends of the bench and it is not yet known if they know each other. Police believe it is possible they may have been a couple who had a row earlier in the evening and were sitting apart and not talking to each other.

About 10 metres away from the couple there was a man who was sat on the grass who was white, in his 30s and wearing a dark jacket and possibly jeans, who could have been Mr Attfield.

So far, six people caught on CCTV walking through the park late on Friday and in the early hours of Saturday have been identified and eliminated from enquiries. However, there are still 17 people who have yet to come forward.
A 27-year-old man from Colchester who was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the murder has, along with a 27-year-old woman, also from Colchester, been released on police bail until May 9.
A reward of up to £5,000 has also been offered by Crimestoppers for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person, or people, responsible for Mr Attfield’s murder.
The televised appeal for information will be made on BBC1’s Crimewatch at 9pm tonight.
If you have any information, call Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
