Commuter Diary: Call for laptops to be banned from quiet carriage

10:31 27 February 2013

Should those wishing to work be banned from quiet carriage?

Should those wishing to work be banned from quiet carriage?

Archant

COMMUTERS seeking peace and quiet on their daily trip to London are being disturbed by noisy keyboards, says Anita Curtis.

She said: “The train was of a normal size and on time again today. However, I would just like to mention the use of laptops in the quiet coach.

“Laptops used to be banned from the quiet coach. Even though there is no actual noise, the tap-tapping of the keyboards can become very annoying.

“There does not seem to be a blanket ban any more, although Wi-Fi is available all through the train - with the exception of the quiet coach - which really speaks for itself I feel.”

  • I commute a couple of times a week and always use the quiet carriage. I do so to read in peace. We are not asking for silence, just some consideration. Not all of us want to be forced to use headphones so that we can concentrate. I agree that laptops can be distracting if they are right next to you. However, they are a lot easier to tune out than people chatting loudly. Better to improve the signage so that people who do not commute regulalry are aware that they have just sat in the quiet coach and should try to keep their voices down. That said, I'd prefer that something could be done to improve reliability on the line! BTW, never understood why wi-fi cannot be available in coach B; my i-phone doesn't make any noise...!

  • Oh for heavens sake... the constant whining, complaining and moaning of commuters is equally as annoying. If you don't like it... do the rest of us a favour and drive or get a bus.

  • Why do work on the way to work?? its a bit like a kid doing their homework on the back seat of the bus before they get to school!! Preperation is the key, if you have to work on a lap top before you get to work, why not work from home??? Save yourself the aggro and the whining.

  • Whinge, whinge! Why should there be a quiet carriage? If you want quiet and I assume that means no talking or rustling of newspapers, then pay for a first class ticket! There are plenty of First Class seats going empty in the rush hour. Cut these down and the rest of us 'plebs' may get the chance of a seat on these overpriced cattlewaggons!

  • Are you allowed to breathe or cough inthe quiet coach and when guard asks for tickets does he he do it in sign lanugage ? Honestly I have heard it all now from Anita Curtis. If she thinks the noise of laptop keys drowns out the sound of the nousy train then she needs some ear plugs. I must make sure when I am next in the quiet coach I purchase my silent page turning tabloid newspaper and not to blink incase it upsets Anita Curtis

  • What about tablets that don't have a physical keyboard? Speaking as someone who uses the quiet carriage, it would be better to inform people that conversation is not permitted.

  • Over the sound of the train ? Isn't the purpose of a quiet coach so that people can get peace and quiet to read, relax or work ? Matt - for those of us who use the train regularly, that time on the train represents a useful productive part of our working day, it's not last moment stuff, it's just time to do productive work. I would suggest there are noisier things on a train than the some of someone pressing buttons on a laptop, and bigger problems with the Norwich - London line which would make more useful reporting (sorry).... slow news day ?

  • For those who want to prepare for a meeting or do some productive work, you can - in coach C or in coach D or in coach E or in coach F or in coach G and sometimes even in coach H. Why be so selfish as to not respect those who want peace in carriage B? And for those really don't understand - Railway Bylaw 6(8) - No person shall molest or wilfully interfere with the comfort or convenience of any person on the railway.
