JUST two days before it effectively ceases to exist, National Express East Anglia has been nominated for a clutch of industry awards!
The Rail Business Awards will be presented in the middle of this month, after the company has handed over the East Anglian rail franchise to Abellio’s Greater Anglia business.
National Express East Anglia (NXEA) has been nominated for five awards, mainly resulting from improvements in the west of the region:
nStation Excellence – for the major upgrade to Harlow Town station.
nRolling Stock Excellence – for the introduction of 30 new Class 379 electrostar trains on routes from London to Cambridge and Stansted.
nRail Business Manager of the Year – NXEA’s Keith Palmer for his project management of the £185m capacity enhancement programme which included the introduction of the new trains.
nMarketing Campaign of the Year – for raising awareness of the new trains operating on the Stansted Express route.
nIntegrated Transport Excellence – for station travel plans to improve public transport access at Colchester and North Walsham stations.
Andrew Chivers NXEA’s Managing Director said: “For National Express East Anglia to be nominated for five Rail Business Awards is indicative of the hard work we’ve put into our Service Improvement Plan, including providing 11,000 more seats for our customers using services into London Liverpool Street since December 2010, an increase of almost 20%.”
Any awards will be collected by Mr Chivers or Mr Palmer who are both remaining with the National Express group.
The company will continue to run the C2C rail franchise between London and Southend and earlier this week Mr Chivers said it would continue to take an interest in rail issues and may bid for further franchises in the future – including the long-term East Anglian franchise which is due to be awarded in 2014.

I always found NXEA to be a good service, and the occasional problems that I have experienced with them were usually beyond their control (i.e. signal problems, track maintenance etc - Network Rail's responsibility). NXEA's online service has been excellent, and it is not a good sign that - despite months of preparation - the new Greater Anglia website has been down all of its first day! Sadly for them, first impressions do count!

These meaningless awards are handed out on a round robin basis from inside the industry. Passengers who use the services of NXEA have rated them among the very worst of the rail operators in this country.
