A man has thanked the NHS for saving his life after suffering a heart attack.

On Friday January 17 at about 12.15pm, David Blackburn, from Cookley, had just got back home from taking his dog for a two mile walk when he started to feel unwell.

His partner, Julia Aspin said: “He came back and said that he wasn’t feeling too bright and that his arms were heavy and tingling.”

Mrs Aspin said she then took Mr Blackburn to Boots the chemists to get his blood pressure checked, which was normal.

But when Mr Blackburn returned home he went pale and said that he wanted to vomit.

Mr Blackburn said: “There was very little warning.”

Within 10 minutes of Mrs Aspin calling 999, a rapid response car was called out, which immediately stabilised Mr Blackburn.

An ambulance arrived 15 minutes later and after assessing the urgency decided they could save at least half an hour if the air ambulance was available, which it was.

The air ambulance landed in the field opposite their home, and to get into the field they had to open a gate with bolt cutters.

Mrs Aspin said: “They were so organised.”

Within 35 minutes of the 999 call being made, Mr Blackburn was on his way to Norfolk and Norwich hospital.

By the time Mrs Aspin had arrived at the CCPI unit Mr Blackburn was back in the ward having already received angioplasty to clear a blocked artery.

Mr Blackburn said: “I was operated on within a minute of getting into the theatre.”

Mrs Aspin said: “He was met by six or eight people at the hospital.

“It was so fast.”

After spending the weekend in hospital, Mr Blackburn returned home on Monday January 20 and is now leading a normal life again.

Mrs Aspin said: “This amazing service brings tears to my eyes very time I think about it.

“It was just amazing. Thank-you.

Basically the speed at which they worked saved his life.”

Mr Blackburn said: “I built a timber shed last week.

“Without them I wouldn’t be here.”
