A 40-year-old Ipswich cyclist involved in a road rage incident which left a lorry driver unconscious will not face court.

The unnamed man was arrested around a week after Michael Garrett was attacked from behind and hit with his own HGV’s door in Copdock last month.

The suspect was questioned by police and released on bail, pending further enquiries.

However, a spokeswoman for Suffolk Constabulary said when the man returned he was offered, and accepted, a caution for common assault.

She said: “After discussion with the victim he confirmed with police that he was happy for the 40-year-old man to be dealt with by way of a caution.”

The incident took place between 10.15am and 10.45am on February 4 in Elm Lane.

Mr Garrett sustained a head injury and lost consciousness during the confrontation.

The 48-year-old, from south Wales, had just delivered goods to Rose Hygiene Products Ltd in Copdock.

Speaking after the assault Mr Garrett said he came back up narrow Elm Lane.

A car approached him from the opposite direction and Mr Garrett stopped and beckoned the car to continue past him.

He looked in the mirror and noticed a cyclist coming up behind and about to overtake his lorry.

“I shoved my arm out of the window and shouted to him, ‘Stop! Stop!’” Mr Garrett said.

“He comes up on the bike and says ‘I can’t hear you, I’ve got my headphones in’. Then he started effing and blinding and saying ‘you shouldn’t be in this lane’. I got out and said to him, ‘If you take them stupid bloody earphones out of your ears you’d be able to hear what’s going on’ – and he confronts me with his chest out.

“So I turned around and walked away from him and the next thing I know I wake up on the floor and the chap from the car was asking if I was OK.”

As Mr Garrett had been returning to the cab the cyclist had come up behind him and smashed his head with the lorry door before riding off.

He was taken to Ipswich Hospital where he was treated for concussion.

  • Firstly how ignorant to wear headphones while cycling and secondly how cowardly to knock someone unconcious from behind

  • There's now four other stories in the news section of motorists killing and maiming people. The road rage incidents between motorist won't even make it into publication. Do you feel such indignation about them too?

  • People get angry on the roads every day but there is no excuse for rendering a man unconscious and then riding away leaving him there! Says a lot about the cyclists attitude, I can't believe he got off with nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

  • Why are today's other top stories( and every other day) involving road incidents between motorised traffic not headlined "motorist" knocks girl of scooter or "motorist" repeatedly drink drives in the same way this rag and most press feels the need to pigeon hole "cyclist"? This story is hardly shock horror- road users argue and police have a word, it's only a story at all after the rag trolls it up to get some clicks from daily hate readers.
