The fire service was initially alerted to the incident just before 5.10am following reports of a building on fire in Hamilton Road.

Two pumps from Felixstowe were sent to the scene, inside the Great Eastern Square shopping centre, and on arrival requested further assistance including that of an aerial appliance from Colchester. Two crews from Ipswich also attended, as well as a command unit and support pump from Woodbridge.

Crews fought the fire using three hose reels, six sets of breathing apparatus, one jet and one thermal imaging camera and had managed to bring the incident under control by 7.15am.

The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.

  • Well remember who you voted for when you moan about cuts to the emergency services. Those Tory created PFI scams, sorry schemes, have to be paid for somehow.

  • A turntable ladder perhaps? - there's only ever been one based in Suffolk for as long as I can remember and that's at Bury St Edmunds. So Colchester is 10 miles nearer. Big up to the Fire & Rescue Teams who appear to have contained damage to the lovely Great Eastern station - quite amazing that Dexters and Play & Exchange were both open at lunchtime.
