A girl of just 12 from Debenham has taken on a 5k run in honour of her brother who is recovering from a brain tumour.

Lily James was just seven years old when her brother Louis was diagnosed with a DNET tumour. The illness resulted in “catastrophic” epilepsy and continuous seizures.

However after many tests and two long and high risk operations at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London Louis is now seizure free.

Now 10, he still finds it very difficult to speak and has developed autism and ADHD, he remains in contact with GOSH.

In gratitude to the hospital and all they’ve done for her brother, Lily this year ran the Race for the Kids in London’s Battersea Park.

“I think people don’t realise how difficult it is for siblings,” said her mother Tansy. “She’s close in age to him and they were very close but of course since his illness he’s a different child.

“The relationship has changed so much and he does take up so much of our time. She’s amazing, she cares so much about him and she looks after him all the time.”

Tansy said she felt like she “owed” the hospital after all their work with Louis, and she and her husband have done a number of fundraising challenges since Louis’ condition improved.

“They are the loveliest bunch of people,” she said. “I cannot speak highly enough of them, they’re incredible.

“When you go there you see some children who are just so ill and have so many problems but GOSH are just so dedicated and you can see the amazing good that they do.”

When the run was first suggested Lily jumped at the chance, said Tansy.

“She’s really pleased to be doing it and it helps her as well. It gives her a positive focus. She made something positive out of it and she feels like she’s helping other children. She’s a very thoughtful child and we are very proud of her.”
