A project to move Suffolk’s smallest library to a village primary school has moved a step further.

Debenham Parish Council has allocated the village library £2,499 for its proposed move to Sir Robert Hitcham School.

Library manager Maureen John told the council at a meeting that the project had come about to cater for the increasing need for its services.

“The reason for the move follows an increase in usage and demand,” she said.

“Since it opened in 2003 we have, through consultation and feedback, found out that it’s too small. It will be moving to premises much bigger than the current one.”

She said the new library would offer a “choice for every generation” with around 4,000 books available.

There will also be longer opening hours, cost savings, free Wi-fi and an increase in volunteer and work experience opportunities.

Concern was expressed about the future of the school’s own library if the village one was to move in, the council heard.

But Mrs John said the school was going to keep its own service and the mobile library would still visit.

The council voted through the funding application for the Debenham Library Foundation which is behind the proposals.

The current village library, which is in Cross Green, is said to be no bigger than a mobile van.

The school has said it is hopeful the library move would further increase numbers visiting the service.

Last year the village library celebrated its 10th birthday.
