An Ipswich man has been fined for trying to renew his cancelled car insurance without declaring he had just caused a collision.

Gary Tricker, 59, admitted withholding information to get insurance at magistrates’ court in Ipswich on Monday.

He had previously been found guilty of careless driving by failing to give way when pulling out of Holywells Court into Felix Road last April, but the delivery driver, of Huckleberry Crescent, said he was unaware Hastings Direct had cancelled his policy a week earlier due to a late monthly payment of £18.

He then failed to declare the accident when renewing the policy less than an hour later.

Prosecutor Ian Devine said Tricker “failed to advise that he had literally just been in an accident, which would have a bearing on the cost”.

Tricker argued: “I never received anything to say it had been cancelled. I would never drive knowing I was uninsured.”

Tricker must pay the court £885, including costs.
