A drug addict who “betrayed” his mother by stealing money and jewellery from her has been jailed for 22 months.

Patrick Ward stole £30 cash, jewellery and a bank card from his mother which he used to buy items worth £123 from a shop, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

Ward, 27, of Stoke Street, Ipswich, admitted two offences of theft from his mother, fraud and being in possession of a knife in a public place. The offences were committed in June and July this year.

Jailing him for a total of 22 months, Recorder Gerard Pounder described the offences as “mean and nasty” and said he had “betrayed” his mother by stealing money and irreplaceable items of jewellery from her.

In addition to jailing Ward, Mr Pounder banned him from going near his mother’s home in Belstead Road, Ipswich, indefinitely.

Folashade Abiodun, for Ward, said he wanted to get help for his problems.
