TWO fisherman were overcome by toxic fumes after mixing bleach while cleaning a fishing boat.
The alarm was raised after the Belgian duo, one of whom had a heart condition, developed breathing difficulties.
A helicopter from Wattisham Airfield was scrambled around 12.30pm to ‘Mare Nostrum’, which was around 30 miles east of Felixstowe.
A spokesman for Thames Coastguard said: “They reported they had two casualties onboard who had been overcome by toxic fumes.
“They were using two types of bleach while cleaning.
“They were just about conscious but were suffering breathing difficulties.
“We got a Belgian coastguard involved on a conference call so they could translate for us.
“We got the rescue helicopter from Wattisham Airfield, who took the casualties to Ipswich Hospital.”
A spokesman for Wattisham said the pair’s condition was serious but no believed to be life-threatening.
