THE region’s trains are undergoing a major spring clean.

Greater Anglia said extra staff had been brought in to carry out a deep-clean of carpets, seats, ceilings, floors and toilet facilities on all 321 carriages they operate. Every train exterior will also be washed by hand.

This work commenced in mid-February and sees one train deep-cleaned per day.

Greater Anglia’s head of rrain presentation, Peter Tyler, said: “Providing a clean, pleasant travelling environment for our customers is extremely important to us and one of our key franchise commitments, demonstrating our determination to make a real difference for our customers.”

  • About time too! On my most recent train journey I took from Elmswell to Cambridge a few weeks ago I saw dried chewing gum stuck to a window, liquid soiled seats and goodness knows what was embedded into the "carpet" flooring. The female conductor was accompanied by a grim looking 15-stone "enforcement officer" in a hi-vis vest! That says it all. The franchise operators are there to maximise revenue. If the conductor was accompanied by a person with a sanitiser spray or a vacuum cleaner that would have sent a very different message about the operator's goals.

  • How do you "deep clean" metal and glass? What's the difference between a "deep clean" and a thorough clean?

  • I reckon they are only undertaking these works at the request of our VIP commentator Anita Curtis

  • This is part of a contractual agreement made by GA in the tender process when they were handed the franchise by the Govt. Complying with the contract is hardly an act of selfless generosity...
