THE East of England Co-operative Society today reported a successful festive season, including its best week ever leading up to Christmas.
In the seven days leading up to Christmas, the East of England Co-op saw an increase of 6.7% for food sales compared to the same week the previous year.
Roger Grosvenor, executive officer – retail, said: “We’ve had fantastic festive food sales, with our best week ever leading up to Christmas. Our stores were especially busy on Christmas Eve, and we saw growth of 11.9% on that day.
“We’ve seen a positive end to 2012, food sales for the last two weeks of the year were up just over 4%, which is a great result in such a competitive market.”
In the seven days leading up to Christmas East of England Co-op Food Stores sold, 2,500 rolls of turkey foil, 3,500 fresh turkeys, 7,400 packs of batteries, 13,000 packs of sprouts, 37,000 mince pies, 91,000 tins of sweets and 113,000 bottles of wine.
Mr Grosvenor added: “The society’s Sourced Locally range has again been a great success for the festive season, reaching £250,000 in a week for the first time, around a third up on last year and including local turkeys and Christmas trees.
“Our positive sales figures show that we can compete with the major multiples, whilst keeping to our values of being ethical, responsible and community focused.
“Running a successful co-operative business means that we can share our success with our local members and communities, from setting up local community groups, to supporting food banks in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex.
“Our colleagues across the society have done a great job, and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone for their hard work across our stores, depots and service departments and also our Members and customers for choosing to shop with their local Co-op.”
