More than 30 emergency calls have been made by concerned members of the public after witnessing a large fire from A12 in Essex.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) said the calls came in after two sheds caught alight in Chitts Hill, Colchester.

“As the property is close to the A12, ECFRS received over 30 calls to report the incident in a very short space of time,” a spokesman said.

The service added on Twitter: “Rest assured, we’re on scene and making good progress in stopping it spreading.”

The first reports came in from around 11.50pm. On arrival, crews from Colchester reported the two sheds were completely alight and the fire had spread to surrounding undergrowth.

By 12.15pm firefighters reporting they were progressing well in tackling the blaze – and by 12.45pm it was out.

An investigation will take place into the cause of the fire.
