Husband and wife team Viv and Julia Sharma purchased some land at Great Bealings, initially as a plot to build two family homes - including their own dream home.

Just one has been built, and No 1 Wood Barn Place is a striking, individually-designed architect home with everything a family could need, or want.

Designer Julia, who is from the Ukraine, and her architect brother Kostia Kuvika, who is with Plan Bureau, designed the modern rural home to a specification that they would have loved to live in.

It is a big, impressive house with a stunning open plan reception room/kitchen/breakfast room.

There are six bedrooms and six bathrooms and additional rooms that can be used for a gym, a cinema room and a spa - making it an ideal home for a large family.

Mr and Mrs Sharma have four children, and originally this home was designed for them, but a change of circumstances and work commitments meant spending more time in London.

Their passion for building something contemporary and stylish didn’t diminish and the project was completed, with quality still their key aim.

It took a long time getting the right planning permissions, and then the house was built.

It was a steep learning curve for them.

Mrs Sharma said: “We worked seven days a week. Viv is in logistics and that is the day job. He also project managed the site so most evenings and weekends were taken up with sorting issues, tweaking designs or choosing materials.”

Mr Sharma added: “I’ve aged in the last four years but I’ve enjoyed every minute of the process. We have fantastic suppliers and builders which has made the process much easier. There have been issues like with all sites, but nothing was insurmountable.

“Prior to building we had seen 40-50 houses ourselves. There isn’t anything like this in Suffolk.

“We hope the house is well received and we are very confident that whichever family moves in they will be happy there”.

Tim Stephens, from the selling agents Humberts, said: “Viv and Julia have produced a special, one-off designed house over 6,200 sq ft, concentrating on family needs. If you require space, this has it ... in spades.

“Facing south and east, the 36ft x 26ft (11m x 8m) kitchen/breakfast room interlinks with the reception room, including a double sided central fireplace for the family to gather around in the winter.

“In the summer, full length height and width windows flood the rooms with light; the sliding doors to the terraces have the effect of living in the garden.

“Downstairs are the playrooms that are intended to be used as a gym, cinema room, with two bedrooms with en-suites and a proposed wet room/sauna/steam room. This is not a standard designed new home - on the two upper floors, the four bedrooms, windows and ceilings are anything but standard - this is a house with a difference.”

There are five acres of grounds, and a three car garage block with an office/studio/annexe above.

More land might be available, by negotiation.

Great Bealings is close to Seckford Golf Course and has easy access into the centre of Woodbridge, and to the River Deben for sailing.

The guide price for Wood Barn Place is £1.95m.
