A fund set up to help the family of Hannah Witheridge attend her murder trial in Thailand has reached its £10,000 target.

Miss Witheridge, a 23-year-old University of East Anglia graduate, was killed on the island of Koh Tao last September. The men charged with killing her and Jersey backpacker David Miller will face trial this summer.

The online fund - www.gofundme.com/HannahWitheridge - was set up by Miss Witheridge’s sister, Laura, to help the family pay for accomodation and a translator. It currently stands at £11,400, with more being donated daily.

Writing online, Laura said: “The pressure and worry that has been lifted through hitting our goal is enormous. We can now focus our energy and time on preparing for the very difficult months that lie ahead.

“The past six months have been indescribably horrific.

“But I’ve also been shown that there are still good, honest, genuine people in the world, people with good hearts, people who care, people who are selfless and kind.

“What this campaign has given us in the way of faith in mankind is, in many ways, the most valuable thing of all.

“At a time when we are struggling to bear the weight of our load, we are propped up by the outpourings of support from, in many instances, complete strangers. It is bitter sweet.”

She added that any surplus money would be donated to charity.

•The Burmese men accused of killing Miss Witheridge and Mr Miller, Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo, both 21, are due to stand trial in Thailand in July.
