A FOURTH person has been arrested today in connection with the theft of nearly £1.2million from outside a Felixstowe bank in 1993.

The arrest comes two months before the trial of Eddie Maher, formerly of South Woodham Ferrers, near Chelmsford, at Ipswich Crown Court on March 4.

The former Securicor guard, who was arrested in Ozark, Missouri, in February last year, has denied theft.

This morning detectives arrested a 54-year-old man in London as part of their investigation.

Lucy Sheehan, a spokeswoman for Suffolk Constabulary, said: “A man has been arrested this morning in connection with the investigation into a security van theft outside Lloyds Bank, Hamilton Road, Felixstowe in 1993.

“The 54-year-old man from Woodford Green, London, has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit theft.

“The man was arrested by Suffolk Police officers at a Police Station in East London. He is now being questioned by detectives from Suffolk Police.”

Last month Maher’s partner Deborah Brett, 47, and his sister Margaret Francis, 64, were detained by Suffolk detectives in Eastbourne on suspicion of conspiracy to steal and assisting an offender.

They are currently on bail until February 13.

The theft occurred when an armoured Securicor vehicle disappeared from outside of Lloyds Bank in Hamilton Road on January 22, 1993.

A total of £1,172,500 was said to have been inside the van and has never been recovered.
