A MOTORIST has claimed she was lucky not to be seriously injured after an object was lobbed at her car from a bridge.

Christine Clover, of Newry Avenue in Felixstowe, was travelling along the A12, near Foxhall, on Tuesday at about 12.30pm when the drama unfolded.

The 47-year-old was driving behind a white van, which was also hit, when she travelled underneath Bucklesham Bridge – the object hit her car windscreen on the passenger’s side.

“I couldn’t stop shaking,” she said.

“I just thought that it must have been kids – that is all I could come up with.

“It did really shake me up because it was like gun fire going off – it was so loud.

“Luckily it was on the passenger side. I think I would have crashed if it was on my side.”

Police are now investigating the incident and are asking people who were in the area at the time to come forward.

Miss Clover, who works at the Ferry Cafe, was driving a red Peugeot 106 but she did not remember seeing anybody on top of the bridge.

Several cars were targeted last year as youths in Suffolk and Essex threw rocks and other objects at cars from bridges.

On one occasion, an ambulance travelling on the A14 near Trimley St Mary was hit.

Miss Clover has called on the people responsible for the incident to think about their actions.

She said: “They definitely need to stop doing this.

“It’s so irresponsible – if it had gone through the windows, it could have killed someone.

“I got off lightly but if it had gone through, it could have been a different story.”

A Suffolk police spokeswoman added: “Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area around this time to come forward if you have any information about the incident or the person responsible. “

If you have any information, call Sergeant Harper at the Felixstowe Safer Neighbourhood Team on 101.
