LACK of enthusiasm and shortage of funds looks set to put paid to proposals for a new town sign for Felixstowe.

"I just don’t think it will ever happen now and it just keeps going round in circles."

Town councillor Doreen Savage

It had been hoped the sign could become a feature of The Triangle in Hamilton Road, which has been redesigned to create a focal point for the resort with a canopy for events and open-air entertainment.

The design was put together from a range of drawings after schoolchildren were asked to draw a new sign for the town.

Around 70 youngsters from three schools came up with ideas for a sign to incorporate the old clock which used to top the toilet block on The Triangle, before the lavatories were demolished.

Sea, sunshine, sand, ships, seagulls and seaside “shallies” – all the resort’s key elements – were included in the design.

However, some councillors were concerned that in a time of recession spending funds on the project would not find favour with the public.

Now former mayor Doreen Savage, who sits on the town council youth forum which drew up the ideas, fears the sign will not be put up.

“It got a bit ridiculous because no one seemed to want to make a decision and it was just getting pushed backwards and forwards between the council and Felixstowe Futures,” she said.

“I think it is very disappointing after all the wonderful work the young people put into it to come up with such a lovely amalgamation of ideas about our town.

“I just don’t think it will ever happen now and it just keeps going round in circles.”

Some councillors felt the sign would have to be very tall to avoid the attention of vandals, and were unsure whether it could be found a suitable site on The Triangle, or whether the clock could be fitted into the design.

No funds were available – although full costings had not been done.
