PROPOSALS for two superstores at Felixstowe have met with a mixed reaction from residents – with nearly as many people saying neither should be built as the number of those wanting both supermarkets.

Albourne Property has submitted plans for a 31,000sq ft supermarket on land off Railway Approach, while the Walton Green’s proposals for a similar-sized Tesco store plus housing and business units on a 30-acre field in Walton High Street are due shortly.

In an exclusive poll on the Felixstowe Star’s website, people voted on whether the resort needed extra food outlets. Of those who took part, 25 per cent said the town didn’t need either of the proposals, while 31pc said both should be built.

Focusing on the plans which will be decided in the new year, only 15pc of people wanted the Walton Green Tesco, while 29pc felt the land at the railway station was the best option.

Suffolk Coastal District Council is carrying out consultation on the Station Approach project.

A spokesman for Albourne Property said: “The proposed foodstore will make a significant contribution towards extending and enhancing food shopping facilities within Felixstowe town centre in accordance with the council’s objectives and will provide a new main food shopping facility within the town in a readily accessible location, thereby enabling local people to shop locally as opposed to having to travel to larger stores elsewhere, principally on the outskirts of Ipswich.

“The submission of the application provides a further opportunity for the local community to comment on the proposals, following the earlier public exhibition.”

The Walton Green Partnership has indicated that its plans will be submitted in the next few weeks.

Tim Collins, speaking for the partnership, said: “The new Tesco food store is a key part of creating a sustainable development at Walton Green, delivering more choice for the growing community. It links in tightly with the new small business units, open space, allotments and new homes which will all be delivered to a high standard.”
