CHANGES are to be made to street signs around Felixstowe to try to encourage people to visit both the seafront and the town centre.

It is hoped the new signs will help people to make the most of their day out at the seaside – but also help business, too.

County councillor Graham Newman said 11 sites had been put forward following detailed discussions involving town councillors, highways officials and members of the chamber of trade and other business representatives from the community.

He said: “We had a meeting last year and it was clearly felt there is inadequate signage between the seafront and its activities and the town centre shopping area.

“I then had some montages made up by the roads unit at Saxmundham showing where signs could be changed.

“There are 11 sites where changes can be made – its really changing existing signs and adding some new ones.”

The aim is to help both motorists, bringing in improvements where signs were not clear or easy to miss while drivers were focussing on on other issues, and also in key places to help pedestrians, especially those arriving by bus and train.

One aim is to encourage people to walk through the shared space shopping area to the seafront.

Traders have long been campaigning for action to improve links between the seafront and town amid concerns that the steep hills between deter people from exploring both.
