A SINGLE mother who was given a suspended prison sentence last year for allowing drugs worth thousands of pounds to be posted to her home breached the order by assaulting a woman in a pub, a court has heard.

Three parcels containing a total of 2.25 kg of cannabis with a maximum street value of more than 12,000 were sent to Charmaine Collins’ home in Coronation Drive, in Felixstowe between October 2010 and March 2011, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

Last September she admitted being involved in drug smuggling and was given an eight-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months and placed on supervision for 12 months.

On Tuesday Collins, 23, of Orwell House, Felixstowe, was brought back before the court for breaching the suspended sentence by committing an offence of assault by beating on the evening of August 31/September 1.

Robert Sadd, prosecuting, said Collins, who admitted the offence, had gone to the Feathers pub in Felixstowe, where she used to work, and after drinking heavily had got into an argument with another woman. “There was an inelegant tussle during which the defendant threw a bottle which hit the victim causing a minor injury,” said Mr Sadd.

Sentencing Collins, Judge David Goodin said, “There was absolutely no excuse for this drunken violence which could have resulted in something more serious than a bump on the head,”

He said he had decided not to make her serve any of the suspended prison sentence.

He made Collins the subject of a ten-week electronically monitored curfew and placed her under the supervision of the probation service for 12 months. He also ordered Collins to attend a Thinkng Skills programme and to pay Ellen O’Callaghan, who was hit by the bottle, 50 compensation.
