PEOPLE, businesses and organisations wanting to give one of Felixstowe’s biggest annual events their support this year will find the cost has again been pegged.

Town councillors have decided to keep the price of sponsoring tubs, troughs and baskets for Felixstowe in Flower at last year’s rates despite a fall in the amount received in 2012.

It was felt donations decreased because some baskets have had to be removed from outside premises in the shared space section of Hamilton Road, but also because of the economic climate.

However, for 2013, thanks to sufficient reserves in the scheme’s budget, the cost of sponsoring a hanging basket will remain at £50 for one and £30 each for more than one, and £65 for tubs and troughs.

Mayor Mike Deacon said the council was delighted with the support of the East of England Co-op, which had generously agreed to replace 11 wooden tubs in the town with new ones.

He said: “We rely on support from the community for this scheme and are very grateful indeed for help such as this.”

Felixstowe in Flower features around 180 baskets and tubs, creating a floral trail through the town from Walton to the seafront.

In addition, businesses and gardeners tend their own plots to provide a burst of colour across the town, and householders, schools, businesses and allotment holders are encouraged to join in by smartening up their plots and entering a series of free competitions.

The culmination is the glittering awards night at Brackenbury Sports Centre when the prizes are presented.

Mr Deacon said it was hoped even more people would get involved in the competitions this year for private gardens, business premises, and guest houses. Details would be announced soon.
