Heavy rain caused drains to overload and rupture the road surface of a seafront street.
The incident happened at Cobbold’s Point in Felixstowe as a ferocious downpour swept across the resort.
Witnesses said a torrent of water poured down Maybush Lane into Undercliff Road East, across the prom and onto the beach.
Storm drains burst, sending up fountains of water, and causing the street surface to crack.
It is the second time the road surface at the spot has been affected by heavy rains in the past few months – a late summer downpour caused the edge of the road to crack and washed away sand and shingle on the beach.
Eyewitness Jonathan Laker said: “The road lifted and cracked up and I believe there was a sewage sump underneath as the water didn’t smell too fragrant.”
It is understood highways officials are due to attend to the damage today.
