Reigning world and Olympic road race cycling champion Marianne Vos is to take part in the Women’s Tour event when it comes to Suffolk in May.

The third stage of the event – Britain’s first UCI ranked international stage race for women – will set off from Felixstowe on May 9 and go across Suffolk Coastal, through Ipswich and then to Clacton.

It will be the first time Vos, 26, who is widely acknowledged as the greatest ever female cyclist, having won world titles on the road, track and in cyclo-cross, has raced on British roads since winning Olympic gold at London 2012.

The Dutch rider said: “The times that I’ve raced in Great Britain – with, of course, the London Olympic Games fresh in my mind – I have been amazed by the huge crowds and the enthusiastic people.

“I’m sure it will be a fantastic event and I’m looking forward to competing here with the best riders from all over the world.”

Councillor Alan Murray, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for health and adult care, said: “It’s fantastic to see such a successful, and high profile name in women’s cycling sign up to take part in the first ever women’s tour in the UK, which is being featured at several locations in Suffolk.

“I am hugely excited for the racing planned for May and I hope that the confirmation of Marianne Vos will assist us in our bid of becoming the most active county in England by inspiring women across the county to take up cycling.”
