Rescue teams have stood down their search for two people who jumped overboard from a passenger ferry a mile off Harwich Harbour.

Thames Coastguard was called to reports that two passengers had gone overboard from the Stena Britannica just before 10am as the ferry travelled towards the Hook of Holland.

“A thorough search of the area has been carried out but nothing found,” a spokesman for the Coastguard said.

“Unless new information comes to light, search and rescue units have now been stood down.”

Felixstowe and Shingle Street Coastguard Rescue Teams, two RNLI lifeboats from Harwich, the Walton RNLI lifeboat and the search and rescue helicopter from RAF Wattisham were involved in the search along with tugs and other boats nearby.

The Britannica, which has 92 passengers and 81 crew onboard, was also involved in the search but has since been released to resume its crossing.

A spokesman for Stena Line said: “The two passengers are believed to have jumped overboard at approximately 09.45 today. The passengers were travelling on the Stena Britannica and the incident occurred off the coast of Felixstowe.

“Stena Line cannot yet confirm the identity of the two passengers.”
