A potentially serious arson attack was averted last night thanks to the actions of a member of the public.
A petrol can had been left against the door of a property in Hamilton Road, Felixstowe, at about 11.15pm.
An object left close to the petrol can had been set on fire but was spotted and extinguished before the flames could spread to the petrol.
A police spokesman said: “Fortunately the initial fire was spotted by a member of the public and police were quickly alerted. Officers arrived within four minutes of the original call, found the fire and extinguished it before it reached the petrol can. Minor damage was caused to a wall and the ground.
“Police are keen to trace a man described as white, with short dark hair, of stocky build, wearing a dark jacket and light coloured bottoms who was seen in the area around 11.10pm – 11.15pm.
“It’s thought there would have been people in the area at the time and officers would like to speak to anyone who may have seen someone matching this description.”
Police are making enquiries to trace the man responsible but are asking anyone who may have seen anyone suspicious in the area, or anyone with information about the man, to call Suffolk Coastal CID on 101.
