FELIXSTOWE: Firefighter Jaime Cryer is hoping for his best time yet when he spends a night cycling around the sights of London for charity.
Mr Cryer, who is based at Felixstowe Fire Station, is taking part for the third time in the Nightrider challenge – raising money for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
The 41-year-old, who lives with his wife Sharon in High Road, Trimley St Martin, said the first year he did the challenge he was about two minutes over five hours, and last year one minute under.
“I am hoping to be within five hours. You expect it to be easy but there are traffic lights and it’s busy and it’s not flat either,” he said.
Last year he raised nearly £2,000 and is hoping to raise a similar amount this time from sponsorship and events such as a quiz and dining-in night.
“It’s 100km – about 63 miles – around the streets London starting at 11pm and it’s pretty busy throughout the night. I think 4am is as busy as 4pm there,” he said.
Thousands of cyclists are expected to take part in the event on June 9 and 10, setting off from Crystal Palace.
Organisers say the ride takes in 50 of London’s iconic landmarks, including Tower Bridge, City of London, Canary Wharf, London Zoo, Piccadilly Circus, London Eye, Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, Royal Albert Hall and more.
It ends at Crystal Palace with a well earned breakfast.
Mr Cryer, who has four children –Jacob, 21, Milly, 13, Poppy, six, and Bella, eight months, said: “I’m blessed to have four healthy children and can’t imagine what it must be like to need the services of a children’s hospice.
“EACH is such a worthwhile cause, so when the opportunity came up to do the Nightrider in aid of EACH I signed up straight away.
“I’ve done the challenge before and would recommend it to anyone. It’s great fun, you meet loads of interesting people and you see London from a completely different perspective.”
