POLICE have issued nearly 900 fines for illegal parking in Felixstowe’s award-winning shared space shopping area – but admit they cannot solve the problem.

Only disabled drivers and delivery vehicles are allowed to park in Hamilton Road between Boots and Bank Corner, and they must park in the black-paved spaces.

In the scheme’s second section, from Orwell Road to Bent Hill, no parking at any time is permitted on the Barclays Bank side of the street, even though there are no yellow lines.

Sgt James Harper, of Felixstowe Safer Neighbourhood Team, said since problems of parking abuse arose about 18 months ago, officers had issued 884 tickets.

He said: “When the scheme first opened we opted to go down the line of giving advice to motorists and moving them on, but then we had to start issuing tickets and take more of a firm stance.

“It’s created a lot of work and a lot of time has been devoted to it.

“I would like to be able to say it has made a difference, but it hasn’t. I personally don’t think the situation has improved at all.”

A recent influx of new officers and a return to duty of some from sickness would mean more visibility on the street and hopefully deter drivers.

Councillor Doreen Savage said: “This indiscriminate parking is a real bugbear of mine – particularly outside Barclays Bank. There are vehicles there all the time which shouldn’t be and it restricts the width of the road.”

  • I am sorry to say but the shared space scheme has killed the town. I was born here and am very angry that the so called council think they no best. How many council member's were born and bred in Felixstowe. An answer would be nice. Thank you.

  • Well, I suppose the Council will spin this as a resounding success for the shared space. No-one was asked about it, no-one wants it, it's cost a fortune and seems to have had the opposite effect to that intended - ie, driving people AWAY from the High Street. Lets hope some munificent company builds a large store, somewhere out of town so we don't have to endure the stink from this dismal failure...

  • Who on earth ever thought this was a good idea? What a waste of public money on an unenforceable, expensive and dangerous scheme. Most of the traffic in this street is using it as a short cut. How are pedestrians supposed to do their shopping in peace, having to continually look over their shoulders at some motorist creeping up behind them. Who wants to sit outside the cafes and coffee bars with cars passing close by. This street should be closed to traffic with barriers during peak shopping times.

  • Lots of tickets being issued, however are they all legally binding? The signs don't quite match what the Department For Transport recommend......884 refunds on the way?

  • Felixstowe is a "cesspit" The town is dead with about 3 shops any. The shared space should just be used as a car park and create the new Tesco !

  • I am really glad they are trying to enforce this although I have witnessed PCSO’s walking down the shared space and not bothering to ticket cars and vans parked illegally during the supposed clamp down. If it is not working then get tougher. I have asked why when the whole area is covered by CCTV they do not use this to enforce the parking. The reply was that it was a controversial and unpopular use of the system. I say if they have not parked where they should not people should have no argument against it.
