AN Olympic hockey star proudly cut the ribbon to officially open a new hockey clubhouse.
Team GB hockey star and Olympic bronze medallist Emily Maguire joined the Mayor of Felixstowe, Mike Deacon, and 150 members of the Felixstowe Hockey Club to open the new headquarters.
It is hoped the investment in the new club- house, based in the Felixstowe Community Hub, will help the club to grow and make hockey more accessible to people.
Before opening the new clubhouse, the Olympic star took a question and answer session with the younger members of the club where she spoke about the 2012 Games and showed off her medal.
She also taught the group some of her skills and took on the club’s male goalkeeper in a penalty shootout.
Club chairman John Bax said: “Now we have a new clubhouse which is situated next to the pitch, this club is in a position to grow. The future is looking really bright.
“We couldn’t have got this far without the support of Suffolk County Council and Leading Lives, local councillors, and of course the members, and having Emily here today has rounded off what has been a truly fantastic day.”
Mr Deacon said: “Ever since I first came into contact with Felixstowe Hockey Club you have impressed me with your spirit, commitment to youth and tenacity to get people playing hockey.
“It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to be here today and I wish you all the very best for the future.” Nikki Walker, a local parent whose children Matilda, Stanley and Thomas attend youth hockey sessions, said: “The club is extremely welcoming and friendly yet professional and well run.
“Having the clubhouse so close to the pitch means after training the children can socialise, and, in the winter months, the parents can stay warm inside! Today has been a great success and we love being members of the club.”
The day was topped off with a fine performance by the ladies’ first 11, who came out 3-1 winners in their home game, watched by the gathered guests.
