St Mary’s Church was packed for the funeral of Darryl Bundy, 29, who died despite desperate efforts to save his life after an alleged attack in Selvale Way a week before Christmas.

Rev Napo John, leading the service, said it was “terrible and sad” that Mr Bundy’s life had been cut so short, and thanked everyone for attending to share the grief of his family and give them support at such a harrowing time.

He described Mr Bundy, whose family live in Stour Avenue, Felixstowe, as a “talented and intelligent young man” who, despite not being best suited to formal education, had been determined to secure a professional college qualification and make a good life for himself.

He was “a born practical man and an artist at heart” and his work as a tattoo artist had left its mark on many in the congregation, providing them with special memories of him.

On the day he died he had tattooed the words “Family is my life” on his body.

Mr John said Mr Bundy was devoted to his family and was a real people person with an excellent sense of humour.

Mr Bundy, who grew up in Felixstowe, had been living in the Wirral for the past four years with his partner Kerry Roberts, who read a poem he had written to her and one in his memory, and recalled his “cheeky smile and charming ways”.

Mr Bundy – who leaves a mum Veda, sister Shauni, 18, two brothers, Steven, 24, and Garry, 26, and two nieces, Garry’s daughters Teagan, six, and Harlie-Joy, three – had a son Liam Bundy, seven, with Kerry, and step-son and step-daughter, Darren Roberts, 16, and Chloe Roberts, 11, who he regarded as his own from their start of their relationship.

Hymns The Lord’s My Shepherd and Amazing Grace were sung by the congregation, and at the end of the service Dance with my Father Again by Luther van Dross was played, chosen by his son Liam.
