Supermarket giant Tesco says it will give £1million to the community if it gets the go-ahead for its proposed new superstore in Felixstowe.
The sum will include £650,000 for the chamber of trade and commerce to administer to promote and improve the town centre to help businesses in Hamilton Road and Walton High Street.
The company is part of the Walton Green Partnership, which has applied for permission for a £50m project to build a 30,000sq ft store, 200 homes, cafe, live/work and business units, community facilities and allotments, on a 30-acre field.
It is one of three applications on the table for stores, and they are all due to come before councillors for a decision on September 19.
The money being offered as part of legal agreements connected with the the Tesco development could be used for promotional events or web-based promotion of the town.
But the range of activities is considerable and could include physical works to the town such improvements to pavements; changes to traffic measures; resurfacing; signage; lighting; and benches.
It could even be used for improvements to shop fronts and other buildings to make the town centre more attractive to visitors and shoppers.
A separate fund of £100,000 would be set up to provide new pieces of public art.
Tim Collins, a partner in Bidwells, agents for the Walton Green Partnership, said: “We have had initial discussions with the chamber of trade.
“It will be up to the chamber to decide how they would spend the money.
“Part of it could provide a town centre manager which the chamber has wanted for a long time.”
Of the remaining money, £43,200 would go to provide more books and resources at Felixstowe Library, £121,820 towards primary education places in the town and nearby villages because of the family housing, £97,080 towards health services, £19,400 for waste disposal services, and £22,000 for new bus stops on Walton High Street.
The development will also help fund a new headquarters for Felixstowe Rifle Club.
