Lorry hit with pellets on A14

DRIVERS have today been warned after a lorry travelling on the A14 at Felixstowe was shot at with a pellet gun.

The shooting follows incidents where vehicles on the dual carriageway have been attacked by people throwing rocks and stones off bridges.

On Thursday, a 53-year-old trucker had just joined the A14 Port of Felixstowe Road from the Dock Gate Two slip road when he heard a “loud bang” and saw part of his driver’s side window had shattered.

A police spokeswoman said a small hole was made and it is thought the damage may have been caused by a pellet gun or similar weapon. The driver was uninjured.

“We cannot rule out that it might have been a stone, but because of its accuracy and where it hit the window of the vehicle, we believe it is a pellet of some description,” she said. “We would urge people to be vigilant and if they see any suspicious activity beside the road to call us on 999.

“If someone is shooting at vehicles it could be very dangerous and potentially cause a serious accident.

“If the cab is hit and the person driving is surprised and makes a manoeuvre to try to keep themselves safe that could lead to someone 
else being put in danger and an accident.”

The incident happened at around 3.10pm on Thursday. The road has
a housing estate on one side and 
development land on the other.

Officers are asking anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area, or anyone with information about who caused the damage, to call 101.

Before Christmas there were a spate of incidents on the A14 where vehicles were attacked from bridges. Two eight-year-olds, from the Felixstowe area, targeted at least 13 vehicles with rocks and stones on December 15, including an ambulance which had its windscreen cracked.

The boys were too young to be 
prosecuted but are being shown a hard-hitting film and a crash-rescue demonstration to illustrate the dangers of their actions.
