It’s that time of year when there’s a new game to play on car journeys – spot the new registration plate, says motoring editor Andy Russell.

The 64 plate hit the road on Monday and it was quite spooky that, as I was driving between Norwich and Ipswich that morning listening to Chris Evans on his BBC Radio 2 show’s 64 plate special asking people to let him know about their new car, I saw my first 64-reg car.

It was a black Renault Scenic followed half an hour later by a metallic grey Nissan Qashqai and 10 minutes later by a red Renault Clio.

So, going by my very unscientific research, Renault is leading the way two-one in the new registration stakes.

It all went a bit pear-shaped when I wondered if the really shiny, glossy black-tyred car with personalised plates was also new.

Thankfully, the 64 plate novelty value should wear off when they are more common.
